In the circles I walk, it is a common sentiment that if you go to several career counselors you will often get several versions of a resume. Depending on who you talk to, they may offer you multiple versions that are supposed to prepare you for any situation or job prospect that you may be presented with.  While this approach certainly has proven itself to assist in landing people their next position – I tend to disagree.

As a career coach working with recent college graduates, one of the first questions I ask new clients is about their Facebook and LinkedIn activity. A typical response from my Gen X clientele is that they are very active on Facebook with anywhere from 300 to more than 1000 friends. In respect to LinkedIn, most have not started using it, and if they have, they typically have somewhere in the range between 8 and 50 connections (connections are similar to friends in LinkedIn terminology). Both Facebook and LinkedIn are strong players in Social Media, but they have a very different focus.
